At 4:59 pm on September 19,1957 the United States conducted the first contained underground nuclear test, ‘Rainier’ in a long tunnel at the Nevada Test Site at Area 12. The 1.7 KT explosion was fully contained, and did not release radioactive contamination in to the air.
