There's actually a reason... Why do these two knuckleballs behave differently when the speed and rotation profiles are exactly the same? Approach angle. The Knuckleball -- unless thrown very firm -- will not fight gravity for you, so you need to throw it slightly downward to get the nastiest movement. When throwing the pitch parallel with flat ground can force the pitch to "skate." Charlie Hough uses the term "skate" to describe knuckleballs that stay on plane. So one of these pitches is thrown
