Delegates from around the world are gathering in Geneva for a critical round of negotiations aimed at securing the first global treaty to curb the mounting plastic pollution crisis.

The United States didn’t participate in a vote in April at the International Maritime Organization that created a fee for greenhouse gases emitted by ships, or send anyone to the U.N. Ocean Conference in June.
