Through the first 20% of the WNBA season there are a bunch of teams that have struggled out of the gate.
History is hard to escape at the United Center. It hangs in the rafters and echoes in the stands. And on Saturday, history was alive on the hardwood at center court as the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever faced off in the first WNBA game held at the arena.
The Chicago Sky (2-5) travel to face the undefeated New York Liberty (8-0) on Tuesday night in a Commissioner's Cup matchup at Barclays Center.
The defending WNBA champions are back in action Chicago Sky come to visit the New York Liberty at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Liberty are still one of two undefeated squads remaining this season along with the other 2024 WNBA Finals participants the Minnesota Lynx.
Sabrina Ionescu had 23 points and seven assists, Breanna Stewart added 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and the New York Liberty beat the Chicago Sky 85-66 on Tuesday night to become the ninth team in WNBA history to start a season 9-0.
The Fever is rolling and now leads Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky by 29 points. Without Caitlin Clark, Indiana has still managed to go 23-of-47 and is now 48.9% from the field as a team.
The Chicago Sky’s historic first game at the United Center ended with a 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever — and an injury to Courtney Vandersloot.
Even without reigning WNBA rookie of the year Caitlin Clark of the Fever sitting out with an injury, the game likely will set a franchise attendance record for the Sky.
