Black individuals were once banned from voting in some Florida primaries, an exclusion echoed in today’s closed party primary system.

Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon has announced her candidacy for the Florida U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Ashley Moody in the 2026 election.

A spokesperson for the Smart & Safe Florida campaign said that per Florida law, “each and every time” the campaign found any discrepancy in petitions, it reported it to the secretary of state and also separated suspicious petitions before submitting them to county elections supervisors.

The lawsuit, filed in Leon County circuit court, is among the latest salvos in an acrimonious dispute over the proposed constitutional amendment, which would allow people ages 21 and older to use recreational marijuana.

Attributing the delay to scrutiny of potentially invalid petition signatures, the state Division of Elections updated signature numbers on its website for a proposed recreational-marijuana constitutional amendment​ after being sued by backers of the initiative.
