BANFF, Alta. — The heads of the world’s richest economies are converging on Alberta today for one of the most high-stakes G7 meetings in recent memory amid a U.S.-led global tariff war and the growing crisis in the Middle East.

The news is about to be flooded with the latest from the Group of Seven as some of the world's most powerful leaders travel to the Canadian Rockies next week for high-level meetings on major issues.

In 2018, the president called for the group to embrace Russia and stormed out of the summit. Now he is seeking to shrink America’s military role abroad and embarking on a more expansive trade war.

As the leaders were scheduled to arrive Sunday hundreds of protesters from several different groups rallied in front of Calgary City Hall, with many carrying anti-Trump messages.

Premier Danielle Smith says the G7 Leaders’ Summit is an opportunity to promote Alberta’s energy ambitions to an eager international audience. Smith, who met with Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, in Calgary on Saturday, will greet leaders from G7 and non-member nations when they arrive in the city Sunday.
