Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded following politically motivated shootings overnight, Gov. Tim Walz said Saturday.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed and State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot and wounded in “targeted shootings” in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, two neighboring suburban cities 10 to 20 miles outside Minneapolis. Hortman served the people of Minnesota with compassion and grace, Walz said.

Gov. Tim Walz said he’s been briefed on “an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings” in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. “The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene,
