A second Labour MP has apologised for comments made in a WhatsApp chat, after Andrew Gwynne was sacked as a minister over messages he sent to the same group. Burnley MP Oliver Ryan said in a statement that comments he made in the group "were completely unacceptable" and he regretted "not speaking out at the time".

Another Labour MP has apologised for comments he made in a a Whatsapp group where a government minister made racist and sexist remarks. Andrew Gwynne, MP for Gorton and Denton, has been sacked and dismissed from the party after he joked in the group chat about an elderly constituent dying.

In a statement on X, Oliver Ryan apologised for remarks he made which he "would not make today", and said he would "cooperate fully" with the Labour investigation.

Mr Gwynne posted messages in a WhatsApp group called Trigger Me Timbers, which included more than a dozen Labour councillors, party officials and at least one other MP, the Mail on Sunday reported. The newspaper said his comments included antisemitic slights and a joke about a constituent being “mown down” by a truck.

A WhatsApp group in which MP Andrew Gwynne posted “completely unacceptable” messages is being investigated, a minister has said.

It comes after the Mail on Sunday published a series of offensive messages apparently sent by the parliamentarian in a group chat, prompting his sacking by Keir Starmer.
