Max Scherzer, who dealt with a thumb injury during spring training, is set to make his first regular season appearance in a Toronto Blue Jays uniform this weekend.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reasons to be confident that they can improve on their 74-88 record from last year. Not only do they still have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette for the time being, but they also added future Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer in the offseason.

His performance Saturday showed why Toronto made the investment. Facing Byron Buxton in the fourth inning, Scherzer executed a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with a swinging strikeout on a cutter. He mixed five pitches — fastball, slider, cutter, curveball, and changeup — with velocity sitting between 91 and 94 mph.
