Five active wildfires — the Lee, Elk, Oak, Stoner Mesa and Crosho fires — have charred more than 142,000 acres, or 222 square miles, on the Western Slope in recent days.

Firefighters are comfortable saying the town of Meeker is safe from the Lee and Elk Fires, but they had to do some serious protection work to make sure more homes don't burn. The Lee Fire has already destroyed at least three homes,

A wildfire that started in northwest Colorado on Saturday afternoon has now burned around 4,000 acres. Evacuations and closures have been put in place near two of the fires burning to the south of Meeker.
